Back in the 1960s
I saw my first Dane. He was a Harlequin -- the most beautiful dog
I had ever seen. I knew then that someday I would have one. In 1976 I
went to purchase a Harlequin. They were all beauties but this one,
black w/white markings, caught my eye or should I say I caught his eye.
I bought my first Dane -- Bruno. He wasn’t a Harlequin, but I
was never disappointed that I got him and not one of the Harlequin pups.
When he was tall enough to reach the door knobs, I had to buy a dead
bolt lock, not to keep people out but to keep him in! He used to
turn the door knob, open the door and then hit the storm door latch with
his nose and go across the street to a neighbors house who had a two
year old boy named Sean. Bruno just loved him. He
would lay on the ground and let Sean sit on his back -- he would stay
like that for hours until Sean got tired. They also had a black cat that
loved Bruno and that cat used to chase all the other dogs away.
When all the neighbors got together outside, Bruno used to lay on the ground
and let the neighbors two little Dachshund play and jump all over him
until that little black cat chased them away, I think that little black
cat loved Bruno so much that she was either jealous or she thought she
was protecting him, like a Dane needs protection from a Dachshund! Yeah -- Right!
