Apollo was a loving, caring, understanding boy, always willing to help, he had a heart that went out to
anyone, human and animal alike.
Our house was a foster home for
three rescue Danes. They could not have been trained so quickly if it had not
been for Apollo. He taught them how to love, trust and share. I was training one
of the Danes to walk on a leash and he panicked, Apollo saw that I was having a
problem, he came over and took the leash from my hand and walked the rescue Dane
around the yard – Training complete, I could not have done so easily if it had
not been for Apollo, he understood my needs as well as the rescue Danes needs.
Apollo could never pass a scale without getting on it. When he was a pup all I had to do was tell him to get on
the scale and he did. When he got older he just could not pass one by with
stopping to get weighed.
He did not like to drink water out of a bowl, he wanted his water from the kitchen faucet and the faucet has
teeth marks in it to prove it, he would chew on the faucet until someone turned
it on.
Apollo won several contests for largest dog and the prize was always donated to the animals in need, except for
one, the prize was a ribbon.
There was one contest and the man in front of us told the woman at the table, where you sign your dog in,to just
give him the prize and he will leave, she said why and he told her he had two
Irish Wolfhounds, she told him to turn around, he did, saw Apollo and left.
Another contest at Petsmart, Apollo was being weighed in and people came in with their Danes, took one look
at Apollo and said, “Well, he is full grown.” I wanted to tell her that when
he was 15 months old he weighed 185 pounds, but I didn’t want to hurt her
feelings since her Danes were 2 years old and only weighed 140 pounds. The prize
was a $100.00 gift certificate, which was donated to PALC, they had dogs there
that were up for adoption.
When Apollo was hungry, he would push his bowls on the floor, if I ignored him he
would push them across the floor, if I kept ignoring him, he would pick them up
and put them in my hands.
